I.
November sky lashes out
at darkened sea’s upward rage,
So vain it is for mortals
to fight in such a battle.

II.
Radiant she looked, young and confident
in that photograph from so long ago.
But the sea recast her comely form--
a bloated mass in a floatation suit,
thrown to an unknown Alaskan beach,
food for ravens and wild animals.

I wish that the fair girl-graduate
had worn the shadowy robes of death
instead of a pleated orange skirt
and pale bones instead of a crisp white blouse,
thus to reveal what she soon became,
a ghost at the portal--teaching, warning.

III.
When a sailor dies in the lawless deep
they belong to God for Him to keep
until judgment day when they all come forth
and look for passage to the stormy North.

This is so sombre, but so well written. Glad I stumbled across is.

Glad you liked it. Written about 25 years past the loss of an old chum.

Fantastic imagery, as always. I love the changes in style and rhythm between stanzas.

This is beautifully put........and reminds me of all the others who have been lost to our waters up here that don't even leave so much as an article of clothing or flotation device, they are just................gone :(

Yeah, how many times we wish we could re-wind...

Poignant poem.

Heather was a school chum who tried to make the crossing from Kodiak to Yakutat (across the Gulf of Alaska) in a wooden troller during the stormy time of the fall. Her boyfriend's body washed up on a Yakutat beach in his survival suit. Heather was never found.

really strong composition. i especially like the building metaphor concept of the last four lines. it's very sad, when you're forced to start thinking about changin the past.

It's a sad, beautiful poem. You chose some words that really hit the reader.
The last line it's my favourite--it is really strong in my opinion.

I'm sorry for your lost
